Community Based Tourism in Sirubari

Sirubari village is a totally Gurung village in Syanja district. It is a short drive and walk from Pokhara, one of the tourist hubs in Nepal. The community welcomed and invited to stay in their homes as a home-stay in the village families. The visitors can enjoy with gurung culture and living styles. The accommodation is simple but comfortable with good bedding and clean toilet facilities. The food is delicious and visitors can enjoy as a family member at the time of eating. Each night there will be entertainment provided by the community with cultural songs and dances and obviously you can join the dance if you like.

This trip was new experience for me. We, Shashis, Govi, Sandhya, Mira, Sujata and me, went their in the Friday eve and we stayed in Seti Dovan at that night with Mira’s family. The conversation between her Grandma was quite interesting to me. I was in mystification while she talked about his health and old age. Govinda’s gossips with Syanjali gals were also pretty funny during bus ride. Gyanbandhu (GBS) also supported the journey partly upto Seti Dovan.

Next morning, we wake up in early i. e, 4.00 am and moved for morning hike. It was quite interesting to hike in the early morning in the moon light darkness. I had organized and went for several hikes before. But this was my first experience to walk in the early morning without any torch. We all enjoyed this experience; sometime we missed the track as well, as all of us were going Sirubari for the first time. But we were enjoying the trip with sardarjii’s jokes during the trip.

During the whole trip, we walked in the early morning becaz we had to reach pokhara on 10.00 am on the Sunday in order to manage CBM training. That’s why; it was a kind of Army training for all of us.

Before discussion with Rudra Gurung, who conceptualized the community based tourism in Sirubari, we were expecting him a young guy. But he was 70 years old man. He briefed us about community based tourism in Sirubari. Though he was old, he was quite energetic and busy in showing the things in the village.

The concept of community based tourism is quite flourishing in Sirubari, as all the villagers are earning certain cash from it. We paid 700 rupees/person/night though they arranged Rs.1100/person for two night stays. Anyway we enjoyed a lot during the trip.

The community initiation to establish community based tourism in rural village is really appreciative and encouraging. We should salute such initiation and should be replicated in almost all village identifying their special identity and explore their traditional and indigenous knowledge, skills. We all are impressive with community commencement towards tourism development in Nepal. The community also informed about the recent visit of Hisila Yami, Minister of tourism, in their village and she is also thankful for the community based tourism in Sirubari.
